IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa track and field program kicked off a weekend of competition Friday at the University of Nebraska’s Husker Invitational. It was a productive day, seeing four new collegiate-best marks, as well as placing sophomore Matt Banse sixth-all time at Iowa in the men’s weight throw.
In a very competitive weight toss that saw six provisional qualifying marks, Banse’s career best 61-2 1/4 (18.65m) toss puts him further in front as Iowa’s team leader in the event, with fellow sophomore Ryan Lamparek right on his heels (18th, 57-11 3/4, 17.67m). Iowa’s top two finishers in the women’s 400 meters, sophomore Nicole Erickson (18th, 57.36) and junior Tiffany Hendricks (23rd, 57.79), both came out with career best times. Senior Rhonda-Kaye Trusty’s fourth place finish of 24.65 is a career best and will qualify her for tomorrow’s finals. Trusty will also move on to compete in tomorrow’s 60-meter dash finals, following a season best third place finish of 7.64 in Friday’s preliminaries. Junior Karessa Farley will move on to Saturday’s finals in the 60-meter hurdles, following her second-place preliminary finish of 8.48, which is a season best.
The Hawkeyes will compete Saturday in day two of the Husker Invitational, with events beginning at noon. Iowa also will begin competition at Notre Dame’s Meyo Invite all day Saturday, with events starting at 9 a.m. CST.
