Iowa Wraps-up Competition at Big Ten Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN- The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the Big Ten Championships tonight. After four days of competition the Hawkeyes finished ninth with 120 points.

Tonight’s competition started off with the 1,650 free event. Freshman Lauren Eytalis and junior Christine Mauro represented the Hawkeyes in the event. Eytalis had a great performance and placed 24th with a personal best time of 17:08.29. She dropped nearly 20 seconds from her previous best time of 17:20.99. Mauro also had a great swim and finished right behind Eytalis for 25th place. She posted a personal best time of 17:09.16, which was a big time drop from her previous best time.

Iowa concluded the competition with the 400 free relay. Sophomore Daniela Cubelic, junior Katarina Tour, junior Verity Hicks and senior Christine Kuczek teamed up for the race. The team placed ninth in the event and posted a time of 3:23.30.

Junior diver Veronica Rydze was Iowa’s top team scorer. She scored the most individual points on the team for her efforts in the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Rydze placed eighth in the one-meter with a score of 281.10 and finished 12th in the three-meter with a score of 284.95.

“We had a great weekend with some great performances on the boards and in the water. Katarina Tour was the highest place finisher out of the swimmers and diver Veronica Rydze was the team’s top scorer. Danielle Carty and Daniela Cubelic also had great performances in their events. We had a lot of person best performances and we are very excited to keep working hard and to continue to improve,” said Head Coach Marc Long.
