IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa volleyball team celebrated the 2009 season with an awards banquet Saturday afternoon at the Kinnick Stadium press box. Head Coach Sharon Dingman presented four student-athletes with awards for their contributions to the volleyball program on and off the court.
Senior Megan Schipper received the Academic Excellence award. A Health and Sports Studies major, Schipper was named to the 2009 Academic all-Conference team and led the Hawkeyes in kills and service aces.
Junior Aimee Huffman was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. The Poth, TX native ranked among the team leaders in kills, assists, digs and blocks despite missing the final six matches of the season.
Sophomore Tiffany Nilges was given the team’s Most Improved Player award. Nilges, a native of Tripoli, IA, averaged six kills and five digs while starting the final eight games of the season.
Freshman Lauren Friedman was recognized as the Hawkeyes’ Practice Player of the Year. This award is given to the player who consistently makes her teammates better by hard work and dedication on the practice court.
Iowa finished the season with a 13-19 overall record, 5-15 in the Big Ten. Since Dingman arrived in 2008, the volleyball program has experienced its most successful two-year stretch in nine seasons. The program has enjoyed record attendance in each of Dingman’s two seasons, cracking the top 25 for the first time in school history in 2009. Iowa returns five seniors and 12 letterwinners in 2010 to compliment a celebrated recruiting class.
