Post-Game Notes

The University of Iowa women’s basketball team defeated Rutgers, 70-63, in first round action of the NCAA Tournament. Iowa improves to 20-13 overall, while Rutgers ends its season at 19-15. Saturday’s win gives Iowa its fifth 20-win season under Head Coach Lisa Bluder, including each of the last three seasons.

Saturday was Iowa’s first NCAA opening round win since 2002, when the Hawkeyes defeated Virginia (69-62) in Storrs, CT. The Hawkeyes are now 17-18 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 8-4 in first round games.

Saturday was Iowa’s first win over Rutgers after losing its first two matchups with the Scarlet Knights. It was also Bluder’s first win against C. Vivian Stringer in six tries. Bluder lost to Stringer three times while she was at Drake and Stringer was at Iowa. The Hawkeyes also lost two matchups against Stringer’s Scarlet Knights in 2005 and 2006.

All five Hawkeye started double figures and accounted for all 70 points. Junior Kachine Alexander led the way with 18 points, while freshman Jaime Printy and sophomore Kamille Wahlin added 15. Freshman Morgan Johnson had 12 points and sophomore Kelly Krei chipped in 10.

Iowa is now 14-0 when four or more players reach double figures and 4-0 when five players score 10 or more points.
