IOWA CITY- The University of Iowa swimming program will compete for the final time in the Field House Pool Saturday at noon. Over 80 alumni swimmers are expected to take part in the final event at the pool, including multiple Olympians, two NCAA Champions, 10 all-Americans and several Big Ten Champions.
After the conclusion of the alumni meet, the team will hold its annual spring celebration at the Marriot Hotel & Convention Center in Coralville, IA. This year’s banquet will honor the 2009-10 student-athletes and celebrate 83 years of swimming in the Field House Pool. University of Iowa swimming and diving alumni will also be recognized at the event.
This year marked the 83rd, and final, season of competition at the Field House Pool. Built in 1927, the Field House Pool was, at the time, the world’s largest indoor swimming pool. In 1979, the pool underwent a $400,000 renovation, making it one of the fastest competitive pools in the Midwest. Diving platforms were added in 1980.
The Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC) will serve as the new home of the Hawkeyes beginning in 2010. The facility is located at the corners of Burlington and Madison streets. Construction began in the fall of 2007 and is to be completed in June 2010. The CRWC will include a 50-meter competition pool, a separate diving well, a leisure pool with lap lanes and 24,000 square feet of fitness space.
