IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated No. 53 Northwestern Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, 6-1. The 72nd-ranked Hawkeyes move to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play with the victory.
“Northwestern was an NCAA qualifier last year and is a ranked team this year,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “I was particularly pleased with the fact we swept all six singles matches. I was especially pleased with the two seniors, Tommy (McGeorge) and Reinoud (Haal), who combined to win the clinching matches.”
The Hawkeyes, 5-2 at home, were unable to claim the doubles point as the Wildcats swept all three matches.
Singles play was another story though as Iowa swept all six matches. At the No. 1 position, Marc Bruche downed No. 82 Joshua Graves 6-2, 6-2. Will Vasos competed at the No. 3 spot for the first time. The sophomore, 13-7 on the season, defeated Spencer Wolf 7-6, 6-4. After trailing early, Tommy McGeorge stormed back to win at the No. 5 position. The senior downed Alex Sanborn 3-6, 7-6, 6-0. Reinoud Haal then clinched the match for the Hawkeyes at the No. 4 spot. The senior defeated Andrew McCarthy 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Nikita Zotov and Austen Kauss also claimed victories. Zotov downed Sidarth Balaji 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, at the No. 2 position and Kauss defeated Tobias Reitz 7-6, 4-6, 10-5, at the No. 6 spot. Kauss has won three straight matches and eight of his last ten.
The Black and Gold will conclude the regular season and Big Ten action next weekend. Iowa will travel to face Purdue Friday at 1 p.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes will then close the regular season Sunday at home against Minnesota. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
