DES MOINES, IA – University of Iowa senior Dan Rolling set four personal records to grab a Day 1 lead of the Drake Relay’s decathlon Wednesday. Rolling, a native of Milford, IA, set personal bests in the 100 meters (11.08), long jump (6.78m), shot put (11.87) and 400 meters (49.41).

“Everything was going my way, I guess. I had a big PR in the 100 and that got my confidence up. Then another PR in the long jump and another PR in shot put. The shot’s still not quite where I want it to be, but you can’t argue with a PR. The high jump went pretty well. I would have liked to to get another couple of bars in, but I can’t complain with how I did. The 400, I just left it on the track and ran a pretty good time, another PR.”

Heading into Thursday’s competition, Rolling leads Minnesota’s Joey Schwecke 3,896-3,871. The top six challengers for the Relays title are all within 86 points. The decathlon concludes Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles, discuss, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meter run.

“Day 2 is a little more rough for me. The javelin and discus I’ll be pretty good at. I plan on being in the top in the 1500 and then the hurdles and pole vault go either really well or really bad. It’s not going to be anywhere in between, I don’t think.”
