IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team lost to No. 35 Minnesota Sunday, 5-2, to conclude the regular season. The 59th-ranked Hawkeyes close the regular season at 12-9 overall and 4-6 in conference play with the loss at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
“It was a tough, close match,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “I thought we played well. We have really closed the gap with some of the other teams in the Big Ten over the last couple years and today was a good example.”
The Hawkeyes, 5-3 at home, swept all three doubles matches to claim the point. Will Vasos and Tommy McGeorge defeated Dino Bilankov and Julian Dehn, 8-4, at the No. 2 position. The duo is 12-10 overall and 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3 doubles, Austen Kauss and Reinoud Haal downed Rok Bonin and Tobias Wernet, 8-4. Marc Bruche and Nikita Zotov also claimed a victory at the No. 1 position. The pair defeated Phillip Arndt and Sebastian Gallego, 8-7. Arndt and Gallego are ranked 50th nationally.
Vasos started things off for the Hawkeyes in singles play. The sophomore downed Bonin at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-2, to give Iowa a 2-0 advantage. Vasos is 14-8 overall. The Hawkeyes were unable to claim any other singles victories and fell to the Gophers, 5-2.
The Black and Gold will compete next at the Big Ten Tournament Thursday on the campus of Indiana University. Iowa, seeded seventh, will battle the No. 10 seed, Purdue, in the first round. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. (CT) at the Indiana University Tennis Center in Bloomington, IN.
