Volleyball Announces Date for Coaches Clinic

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa volleyball program will host its second-annual Coaches Clinic Aug. 14-15 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The two-day clinic will include the Hawkeye coaching staff and special guests Tara Cross-Battle, Tom Keating and Shirley Ryan.

Cross-Battle was United States Volleyball’s first four-time Olympian, having competed in the 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. In 1995, she was named Team USA’s MVP. She is a four-time Division I all-American, twice earning NCAA Division I Player of the Year honors while competing at Long Beach State (1988-89). Born in Houston, TX, Cross-Battle is currently the Head Training Coach for Texas Tornados Volleyball Club, a position she has held since 2006.

Keating was head coach at Iowa high school powerhouse Dubuque Wahlert, guiding his team to 17 conference championships and 11 state titles. Keating has received numerous awards, including the 2003 NFHS and prepvolleyball.com National Coach of the Year. In 2002, Keating was inducted into the NHSACA Hall of Fame. He has been named Iowa High School Coach of the Year seven times. During his time at Dubuque-Wahlert, Keating collected an impressive 776-82 record. Keating was a featured coach at last year’s inaugural Coaches Clinic.

Ryan is the head coach at Mount Vernon High School; where she led her team last season’s Class 2A State Championship. She was named Iowa’s Class 2A Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the 2009 NHSACA National Coach of the Year award. Ryan owns a career record of 789-114. She has won two state titles (2009, 1984) and recorded three runner-up finishes (1985, 2007, 2008).
