The University of Iowa Athletics Department seeks applications for an Assistant Director, Athletics Communications. This is a full-time, 12-month position and includes full University benefits.
Responsibilities: Write and edit feature stories, news releases and other editorial for various official World Wide Web sites and institutional publications and, where appropriate, for distribution to local, regional and national media. Research and assemble records, statistics, rosters, etc., for use in media guide, souvenir program and other publications and resource guides. Determine and manage content for various official World Wide Web sites, e-mails, and newsletters, both print and electronic. Provide assistance to local, regional and national media. Plan and/or execute photo sessions and manage the database of photographs that are a result of those sessions. Staff assigned events, home and away. Assist in writing and designing a wide variety of publications, print and electronic, fliers, brochures, information guides, etc. Assist in the maintenance of the history of the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI. Assist in the supervision of interns and student staff.
Required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in journalism/related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Six months to one year of experience in sports information, sports media and/or public relations, or publicity field. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience with “new media”, e.g., the World Wide Web, e-mail, podcasts, digital audio, digital video, digital photography, social media sites, etc. Proficient in software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, desktop publishing, and sports statistics software.
Preferred qualifications: A minimum of three years of experience in sports information, sports media and/or public relations, or publicity field. Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of “new media” as tools to communicate directly to targeted audiences. Demonstrated experience in contributing and updating content available on the web. Demonstrated experience with digital photography. Experience working within a university environment. Preference will be given to the candidates that best meet the programmatic needs of the External Affairs Unit of the UI Athletics Department.
