Sash named to Jim Thorpe watch list

Aug. 2, 2010

CHICAGO — University of Iowa junior strong safety Tyler Sash has been named to another watch list. The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder from Oskaloosa, Iowa, is a repeat member on the Jim Thorpe Watch List. The preseason watch list includes 35 of the nation’s best defensive backs.

Sash, a candidate for 2010 All-America honors, was a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award in 2009 as a sophomore. He was named second-team All-American last year and was named first team all-Big Ten by the coaches and media.

Previously this offseason, Sash was named to the Lott Trophy and Bronko Nagurski Award watch lists. He has also been named to numerous 2010 preseason All-America teams.

Last season Sash ranked second in the Big Ten and 11th nationally in interceptions (six in 13 games). He holds the Iowa record for career interception return yards (350 on 11 interceptions) and he has 138 career tackles with eight tackles for loss. Sash has started 21 straight games.

Only two other Big Ten defensive backs appear on the watch list and both are from Ohio State: Jermale Hines and Chimdi Chekwa.
