IOWA CITY, Iowa — The throwback 1958-style helmets, jerseys and pants worn by members of the University of Iowa football team during its Sept. 25 game against Ball State inside Kinnick Stadium will be sold as a set for $550. The purchase will also include a certificate of authenticity.

There have been many outstanding teams in UI football history: the 1921 and ’22 Hawkeyes, coached by Howard Jones, enjoyed undefeated (7-0) seasons and won Big Ten Conference championships; head coach Hayden Fry won three league titles and the 1985 team held a No. 1 ranking during the regular season; the Hawkeyes under head coach Kirk Ferentz shared Big Ten championships in 2002 and ’04 and started the 2009 season with a 9-0 record. But the 1958 UI team won an outright Big Ten title, the Rose Bowl and a national championship, making it what many consider the best in school history.
The 1958 Hawkeyes finished the season 8-1-1 overall, 5-1 in Big Ten play and defeated California 38-12 in the 1959 Rose Bowl. Team MVP Randy Duncan wore jersey No. 25, team captain John Nocera wore No. 33, Rose Bowl record-setting running back Bob Jeter wore No. 11, All-American end Curt Merz wore No. 82.
This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Hawkeye football history. These classic, collectible uniforms are not replicas, but were made in Waterloo by Powers Manufacturing and will be worn by the 2010 UI players during the game against Ball State.
The helmet is “Green Bay gold” with 3-inch gothic jersey numbers on each side and a black stripe down the middle. The last name of the player that wore the specific number during the “Forest Evashevski era” will be on the front bumper of the helmet and the rear bumper of the helmets will read “1959 Rose Bowl.”
The jerseys are black with “Green Bay gold” trim and numbers. The numbers will be on the front and back with no player name on the back of the jersey. The pants will be “Green Bay gold” with a black braid on the outside of each leg. The players will wear black shoes with white laces and a white Nike swoosh and low-cut white socks with 1/2-inch black trim at the top.
In 2004, the Hawkeyes celebrated Nile Kinnick’s 1939 “Ironman” team with the inaugural “Throwback game,” a 39-7 win against Kent State.
