Meet the Hawkeyes: Rachael Bedell

Aug. 13, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – As the University of Iowa volleyball team enters the first weekend of training camp, hawkeyesports.com has caught up with another Hawkeye newcomer. Today’s freshman spotlight is Rachael Bedell, an outside hitter from Plano, TX.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
“I am obsessed with movies. I can literally sit and watch six movies in a day and be completely satisfied.”

Why did you choose the University of Iowa and Iowa volleyball?
“I absolutely loved the campus and what the school had to offer with the major I want to purse (broadcast journalism). All of the girls on the team and the coaches are absolutely amazing. It also helped that two of my best friends were coming the same year (Bethany Yeager and Chante’ Thompson).”

Favorite Iowa volleyball player (past or present) to watch and why?
“I can NOT pick a favorite player, they all have been AMAZING!”

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
“I love going different places, so I really would love to go anywhere. I would love to go to Greece and just take pictures and paint the whole time. I would also love to go to South Africa and experience that whole side of the world. I just love the cultures of different places.”

Favorite thing about Iowa Volleyball Team?
“All of the girls, everyone is so close.”

What super power would you most like to have? Why?
“I would love it if I could read people’s minds. I am always wondering what people are thinking when they are dazing off into nothing. I think it would be very comical.”

If you could play another sport in college what would it be and why?
“I can’t even think of another sport that I would play. I loved basketball and soccer when I was younger so probably either of those.”

Most played song (& by whom) on your iPod?
Nike Boots by Wale on one iPod and on another Old Fashion Letters by Jason Reeves.”

What is the best characteristic about you?
“If someone is in a bad mood, I can make them forget about it, stop thinking so much, and cheer up. I love to put smiles on people’s faces in any way, shape, or form.”

What is something you can’t live without? Why?
“I couldn’t live without my music, movies, or my Nikes. Those are ALL detrimental to me and my everyday.”

Future plans after graduating from the University of Iowa?
“My dream would be either to be a sports broadcaster or something with photography and art.”

Finish the sentence…
I play best when… I’ve had a perfectly awesome jam-session and/or dance party before the match.
The best thing about volleyball is… getting really excited after an awesome point.
I hope to be remembered in life for… my ability to put a smile on people’s faces.
On day I will… be in Sports Illustrated. Even better, be in Sports Illustrated for interviewing Coach K (Duke basketball coach) and his players.
