WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was in action at the Purdue Fall Invitational for the second day of competition. It was junior Marc Bruche who led the Hawkeyes at the Scwartz Tennis Center for the second day in a row, winning two singles matches to reach the Flight A semifinals.
Bruce, Iowa’s No. 1 singles player, continued to win easily in the Flight A main bracket. Bruche picked up a victory over DePaul’s Ben Hartman by a 6-1, 6-4 count. Bruche then reached the semifinals by knocking off Western Michigan’s Pablo Olivarez 6-2, 6-2.
The junior will play for a shot to reach the finals match against Simon Blomberg of Western Michigan today. The winner will face either Adam Fabik or Kazuya Kamada for the Flight A singles championship.
Senior Austen Kauss picked up two singles victories on the consolation side to reach the Flight B consolation semifinals, triumphing against Dayton’s Robert Salcedo and Valparaiso’s Guto Gasper. Will Vasos picked up a victory on the consolation side before bowing out as well, as was the story for Jeroen Gortworst. Michael Swank reached the quarterfinals of the Flight C main event before falling.
In doubles play, Jonas Dierckx and Joey White picked up two victories on the consolation bracket, before falling in the semifinals.
Bruche and Kauss will play for the Hawkeyes today as the Purdue Fall Invitational wraps up.
