IOWA CITY, Iowa – Fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes making your way to historic Kinnick Stadium Saturday, take note: Check the map, then check your closet.
Iowa’s 2010 Big Ten Conference opener against Penn State – a primetime appearance for the nationally ranked Hawkeyes beginning at 7 p.m. on ESPN – has been declared the first-ever Black and Gold Spirit Night. Fans are asked to wear either black or gold, depending on their season location inside Kinnick.
The newest addition to the colorful line up, Black and Gold Spirit Night will give the fans of the Hawkeyes an opportunity to show their support for the Hawkeyes and provide a stunning image of the UI’s prized Kinnick Stadium when ESPN pans the venue at kickoff.
Official “Black and Gold Spirit Day” t-shirts featuring the signature of Kirk Ferentz will go on sale later this month, however, purchased can be made in advance by clicking HERE. Fans should note that $1 from each “Black and Gold Spirit day” t-shirt sold will be donated to the Iowa Children’s Hospital.
“The `Spirit’ game is an idea borne from discussions among our football staff. It could look spectacular both in the stadium and on television. Obviously, it’s a big night for the Hawkeyes and it’s the UI’s opportunity once again to shine on the biggest stage of all – primetime national television,” said Rick Klatt, associate athletics director for external affairs.
“We’re optimistic Hawk fans will be excited about the opportunity to once again provide the team some big-time support and make a statement on national television about how it’s great to be a Hawkeye.”

The UI is also “incentivizing” fans attending Saturday’s game. It will be one of six events this fall where one lucky fan – who has dressed appropriately – will become a finalist for a trip for two to the Hawkeyes’ next bowl game. The UI will randomly select 25 seat locations and work down that list until it identifies the fan who is wearing the color they have been asked to wear.

“We’re hoping we get a finalist at our first seat. I can’t imagine how the fan will react if I tap him or her on the shoulder and say, “Is this your seat? Sorry, but all you needed to be wearing was a gold (black) shirt and would be a finalist for a trip for two to the Hawkeyes’ next bowl game. That would be a bummer,” said Klatt.
On Saturday, Oct. 30, Iowa will stage its annual “Blackout Saturday” game. Fans of the UI are invited to turn Kinnick Stadium into a sea of ghoulish black when Iowa entertains Big Ten Conference rival Michigan State on Halloween.
