Hawkeye Women Finish 10th at Pre-Nationals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – – The University of Iowa women’s cross country team finished 10th at the Pre-Nationals Meet Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. The Black and Gold, ranked fifth in the Midwest Region, posted a score of 353, finishing just one point out of ninth place in the 38 team field. The 6K race was held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, the site of the NCAA Championships.

“We bounced back as we anticipated we would,” said Head Coach Layne Anderson. “As a team, we trained hard and got back to where we thought we should be. We have to improve, and are looking forward to the Big Ten Championships in two weeks.”

Florida State won the 6K event, posting a team score of 115. Risper Kimaiyo of UTEP finished first in the event with a time of 20:03. The Hawkeyes were paced by Betsy Flood. The junior posted a time of 20:54 to finish 34th. The time is the fifth best in Hawkeye history. Fellow junior Brooke Eilers finished 48th, turning in a time of 21:15. McKenzie Melander finished 63rd. The junior ran a time of 21:22. It is the 10th best time in school history. Senior Lauren Hardesty finished 66th, posting a time of 21:23, the 11th best in Hawkeye history. Amanda Hardesty posted a time of 22:00. The senior finished 143rd. Kelsey Hart finished 157th. The sophomore recorded a time of 22:11. Freshman Megan Ranegar finished 191st after turning in a time of 22:31.

The Iowa men’s team, who won the Bradley Classic yesterday, and the Hawkeye women’s team will compete next at the Big Ten Championships. The meet will be held in Madison, Wis., on Oct. 31.
