Oct. 22, 2010

NORMAN, Oklahoma —The University of Iowa men’s tennis team got out of the gates in main draw action today at the ITA Central Region Championships. The Hawkeyes picked up two victories in singles play, as well as two victories in doubles action.

Heavy rains slowed down day one of the tournament as play was moved indoors, but the doubles tandem of Will Vasos and Austen Kauss started strong, going 2-0 on the day. In round one, Vasos and Kauss defeated Alastair Barnes and Grant Ive of Tulsa by an 8-6 margin. In round two, the tandem came away victorious again with a victory over de Paula Periera and David Cavalcanti of Wichita State, winning 8-2. Vasos and Kauss will compete in the quarterfinals tomorrow against Arkansas’ Christopher Nott and Matthew Hogan.

Kauss also paced the Hawkeyes with a singles victory in the main draw, defeating Nott 7-3, 6-3 in the opening round. Junior Marc Bruche moved his singles win-streak to five games after defeating Serge Ristivojevic of UMKC 7-5, 6-1.
