Alexander Named Candidate For Lowe's Senior CLASS Award

Nov. 3, 2010

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior Kachine Alexander is one of 30 Division I women’s basketball players nationally to be selected as a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for “Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School,” the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible, the candidates must show excellence in four categories: community, classroom, character and competition.

Alexander is a two-time honorable mention All-American and a two-time all-Big Ten selection, including first team honors as a junior. She was also one of five players selected to the Big Ten all-Defensive team last season. As a sophomore, Alexander became the first Big Ten women’s basketball player to record two triple-doubles in one season. Last year, she was one of only two guards in the entire country to average a double-double.

In the community, Alexander volunteers at numerous organizations and activities in the Iowa City area. She volunteers at Camp Courageous, which is a local camp for disabled individuals. She has also volunteered for the March of Dimes, the Ronald McDonald House, the ACS Hope Lodge and the Shelter House. The Minneapolis, Minn., native also makes routine visits to elementary schools.

The candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the winner. Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the women’s basketball winner at the Final Four in Indianapolis.

Alexander is one of four Big Ten student-athletes up for the award. She is joined by Amy Jaeschke (Northwestern), Alyssa Karel (Wisconsin) and Jantel Lavender (Ohio State).

Alexander and the Hawkeyes open the season with an exhibition against Concordia-St. Paul Sunday at 1 p.m.
