IOWA CITY, Iowa — The nationally ranked Iowa Hawkeyes play at Minnesota today in a game that kicks shortly after 2:30 p.m. Iowa time. And Kirk Ferentz is hoping the Gophers’ Troy Stoudermire doesn’t get his kicks playing against the Hawkeyes.
Stoudermire is the last in what Ferentz believes has been a long line of exceptional kick returners in the Big Ten Conference in 2010. And, as luck would have it, the schedule makers saved the best for last.
A junior from Dallas, Stoudermire currently leads the Big Ten in kick returns with an average of 27.9 yards per return…less than a yard better than Iowa’s Derrell Johnson-Kouliaos and enough to warrant the attention of Iowa’s head coach.
“They’ve got the best one in the conference. There are a ot of good ones, but he’s the best,” Ferentz said Tuesday during his visit with the media.
“If we’re smart, we’ll (kick it away from him). It’s not like we cover very well. As I said, we’ve got a lot of good ones in our league and I think he’s the best. He’s proven it on paper and on the field.”
Stoudermire had a big day against the Hawkeyes two years ago when Iowa was rolling to a 55-0 victory and gave the freshman plenty of opportunities, both literally and figuratively.

“It was just hard to believe how well he did against us. He really went right through us,” said Ferentz.
