Hawkeyes Place Third At Hawkeye Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa– The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team wrapped-up the Hawkeye Invitational tonight after three days of competition. The Hawkeyes raced strong all three days and came out with a third-place finish and scored 853 points. Denver took first-place with 1052.5 points and Illinois came in second (880).

The Hawkeyes started out the last day of competition with the 1,650 free. Sophomore Lauren Eytalis recorded a collegiate best time of 17:04.42 for a third place finish. Eytalis’ teammate’s freshman Taylor Newgaard and junior Christine Mauro finished fourth and fifth in the event with times of 17:09.20 and 17:11.34, respectively.

Junior Daniela Cubelic had the only first-place finish of the night for the Hawkeyes. She took the top spot in the 200 back with a collegiate best time of 1:59.70 and also set a new meet record. Senior Katarina Tour earned a collegiate best time of 51.07 in the 100 free while freshman Emily Hovren rounded out the top-eight in the event with a time of 52.11.

In the last individual event of the night, freshman Haley Gordon ended a successful meet with a fifth-place finish in the 200 fly. She posted a collegiate best time of 2:05.01. Freshmen Abby Tuchscherer and Lauren Drennan finished 11th (2:07.97) and 12th (2:09.24).

“Overall, the meet was exactly what we had planned for,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “We had a big competition in an outstanding venue and it was the first time we had an invitational type meet in this pool. It was great to see it work and how it’s designed to work.”

Freshman diver Lauren Kelba competed in the women’s platform diving event. She placed second in the event with a score of 221.35.

The Hawkeyes will return to action Dec. 10 when they host Iowa State at home. The event will start at 6 p.m.
