Alexander Makes First Cut For Wooden Award

Jan. 11, 2011

PARDON OUR PROGRESS! As friends of the University of Iowa and fans of the Hawkeyes know, the UI Athletics Department is well into a multi-million dollar revitalization of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. This important and exciting project has reduced for this season the number of ticket windows that are operational on game nights. Fans attending the home events of the 2010-11 UI men’s basketball, women’s basketball and wrestling teams are invited to avoid game night delays by purchasing their event tickets online or in advance of game day. If your schedule doesn’t allow for an advance purchase, we recommend you consider arriving at the Arena a little earlier than originally planned. Go Hawks!

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior guard Kachine Alexander is one of 20 NCAA Division I women’s basketball players selected to the 2010-11 John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 20 list. The list is comprised of 20 student-athletes who, based on individual performance and team records, are current frontrunners for one of college basketball’s most prestigious honors.

Alexander was initially chosen for the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Watch List in October, which named 30 players to the initial list. The Los Angeles Athletic Club trimmed the list to 20 student-athletes today. Alexander was also named to watch lists for the Wade Trophy and Naismith Award.

Alexander has helped lead Iowa to a 14-3 record and a top-20 national ranking this season. She is averaging 14 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Alexander had recorded four double-doubles, with her most recent coming in a win over Ohio State (16 points and 13 rebounds). Alexander currently ranks second in the Big Ten in offensive rebounds per game (3.5) and third in total rebounding (9.4 per game).

The Minneapolis, Minn. native recently became the 27th player in Iowa history to record 1,000 career points. She is also just the third player in school history to collect 1,000 career points, 700 career rebounds and 200 career assists.

Alexander earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors this season, along with MVP recognition at the Islander Tip-Off Tournament and the KCRG-TV9 Hawkeye Challenge.

The 35th annual Wooden Award ceremony, which will include the announcement of the men’s and women’s award winners, a special tribute to Coach Wooden and Wooden Award founder Duke Llewellyn and the presentation of the Wooden Award All-America Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, will take place the weekend of April 8-10, 2011. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight.
