IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field teams hosted the Iowa Open Saturday. The men’s and women’s team each finished the day with ten first place finishers.
Sophomore Majesty Tutson opened the event with a personal record setting mark in the weight throw. Tutson hit 55-8 ½ (16.98m) with her final toss of the day to earn first place in the event. Sophomore Kelsey Taylor took second place with a throw of 53-7 (16.33m).
In the field for the men, sophomore Brandon Oest and senior Graham Valdes both reached 6-8 ¾ (2.05m) in the high jump. Senior Matt Banse took first in the weight throw with a throw of 61-7 ½ (18.78m). Juniors Ryan Lamparek and Nick Brayton each recorded new collegiate bests hitting 61′ ¼ (18.60m) and 49′ ¾ (14.95m), respectively.
On the track, sophomore Jordan Mullen dominated the competition in the 60-meter hurdles. Mullen crossed the finish line in 7.88 seconds, his collegiate best time. Ethan Holmes also competed in the race, finishing third with a time of 8.16.
Hawkeye newcomer Troy Doris continued to impress, taking first in the 60-meter dash. The junior crossed the line at 6.83 followed by D’Juan Richardson (6.92) and Zeke Sayon (6.93). Doris’ winning time earns him seventh place Iowa’s all-time top performances list.
Iowa women took the top six places in the 800-meter run. Senior Bethany Praska led the crowd of Hawkeye runners, finishing in 2:11.22. Lauren Hardesty followed closely coming in at 2:12.80.
Three Hawkeye women ran collegiate best times in the mile. Sophomores Megan Ranegar and Kelsey Hart finished one, two in a very close finish. Ranegar clocked in at 5:04.94 and Hart was right on her heels, finishing at 5:04.95. Freshman Katherin Rehn placed fourth in the event after running a 5:11.63.
The day ended with a pair of Iowa wins in the 1,600-meter relay. The women in Black and Gold took first with a time of 3:52.21 while the men crossed the line at 3:19.46.
“It’s always nice to be at home,” men’s head coach Larry Wieczorek said. “I think it went very well today for us. We’re building on a good meet we had at Illinois last weekend and we had some more good performances today. It was great to have Jeff Thode back in action today. We saw that Troy Doris could sprint as well as jump and Jordan Mullen finished 1/100th from the school record so overall lots of good stuff from us today.”
The Hawkeyes return to action next weekend at the Golden Country Classic in Minneapolis.
