Bulls Defeat Iowa In Tampa

March 14, 2011

TAMPA, Florida – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was defeated in Tampa by South Florida on Monday evening by a 7-0 count on the USF Varsity Courts.

The Bulls (7-3 overall) dealt Iowa (5-5) its worst loss of the season, as the Hawkeyes, playing for the second time in as many days, couldn’t keep up with South Florida.

“South Florida is always a good team and they played particularly well,” said head coach Steve Houghton.” I think, as for us, we are still feeling our way towards getting accustomed to playing outdoors.”

South Florida needed extra games in two of the three doubles matches, but prevailed in all three. Iowa’s senior Marc Bruche and junior Will Vasos held tough against Romain Deridder and Yannick Yoshizawa, but fell 9-7. The same score was the margin in No. 2 doubles in favor of the Bulls again, as senior Austen Kauss and freshman Jonas Dierckx dropped their first doubles match of the season. In No. 3 doubles, senior Nikita Zotov and sophomore Garret Dunn were defeated 8-5.

In No. 1 singles, Bruche took a set against Lucas Jovita to force the only third-set match of the day. Jovita prevailed in the third, winning the match 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

Both Vasos and Dunn forced extra games in the first set of their matches, but each fell short by a 7-5 margin, and each fell 6-3 in the ensuing set.

The Hawkeyes beat Central Florida 5-2 to start their spring break trip, and will now travel back to Orlando to face Florida Atlantic (7-5) on a neutral setting. The match will be on Thursday.
