IOWA CITY, Iowa — Senior Kachine Alexander has been named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) all-Region team. Alexander is one of only five players selected to the Region 6 team, and one of only 52 Division I women’s basketball players to earn the award.
Alexander is now eligible for the State Farm Coaches’ All-America team. The All-America committee will trim the list to 40 finalists Monday, March 21. Those 40 finalists will all be in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches’ All-America team.
As a senior, Alexander was named first team all-Big Ten and was one of six players selected to the Big ten all-Defensive team. The Minneapolis, Minn., native was also named to the Midseason Top 20 list for the Wooden Trophy, the Top 30 Midseason list for the Naismith Award and is currently on the Wade Trophy Watch List. Earlier today, Alexander was selected as one of five finalists for the first annual Premier Player of College Basketball Award.
Alexander is the top rebounding guard in the country at 9.5 rebounds per contest, and is Iowa’s second leading scorer at 14.3 points per game.
Four players from the Big Ten were chosen to the Region 6 squad. Alexander was joined by Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender, Michigan State’s Kalisha Keane and Northwestern’s Amy Jaeschke. Wisconsin Green Bay’s Celese Hoewisch was also included on the team.
Alexander earned WBCA all-Region honors last season, and was later named a State Farm Coaches’ honorable mention All-American.
Alexander is the 12th Hawkeye in school history to earn all-region honors, and just the fourth player in school history to earn the award twice, joining Michelle Edwards (1987-88), Toni Foster (1992-93) and Franthea Price (1989-90). Alexander is also the fifth player to earn the award under Head Coach Lisa Bluder, joining Cara Consuegra (2001), Jennie Lillis (2003), Crystal Smith (2006) and Kristi Smith (2008).
Alexander and the Hawkeyes are a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and will face No. 11 seed Gonzaga Saturday at 3 p.m. (CT) in Spokane, Wash. The game can be seen regionally on ESPN2 or online at ESPN3.com.
