March 23, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s track and field coach Larry Wieczorek has announced Ben Witt has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Hawkeyes in 2011-12.

A native of Burlington, Iowa, Witt finished third in the 2010 4A Iowa State Cross Country meet and helped lead Burlington High School to the 2009 Iowa state title. He also placed sixth in the 800 meters at the 2010 Iowa state track meet.

“Ben has the range to run every track event from the 800 to the 3200 this spring and compete with the best in the state of Iowa,” said Wieczorek. “I really like his speed over the 800 meters. I think it will give him the ability to be an outstanding collegiate distance runner at Iowa next year. He is an outstanding student who will excel in the classroom. He is enthusiastic about running and is willing to train hard to succeed. I’m glad he is a Hawkeye.”

Witt joins a recruiting class that features three of the state’s top prep athletes. Iowa natives Brennan Davey (Indianola) and Kevin Lewis (Ottumwa) committed to the Hawkeyes last month. Gabe Hull (Bloomington, IN) also signed his NLI to join the Hawkeyes next fall.
