Hawkeyes Topped By Big Ten Leader

April 3, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to No. 29 Indiana on the road by a 7-0 margin. No. 62 Iowa (8-7 overall, 2-3 in conference) won the first doubles match, but the Big Ten leading Hoosiers (18-4, 5-0) won every match from there.

Six of Iowa’s seven losses on the season have come to ranked opponents.

“Indiana is atop the Big Ten standings, and they were just too good for us today,” said head coach Steve Houghton.

Junior Tom Mroziewicz and sophomore Garret Dunn teamed up in No. 3 doubles to lead Iowa on the day. Mroziewicz and Dunn defeated Will Kendall and Isade Juneau 8-3 in the first doubles match to be completed, but Indiana’s pair of ranked doubles teams won the next two matches.

Mroziewicz and Dunn each finished with respectable weekends for the Hawkeyes, as both also had a singles and doubles victory against No. 60 Purdue on Saturday. Iowa beat Purdue 4-3 to start the weekend. Mroziewicz and Dunn are now 5-2 in doubles together.

Senior Austen Kauss pushed his match to three sets against Claes Goransson in No. 4 singles. Kauss won the first set 6-4, but couldn’t stay in front. Both Marc Bruche and Dunn each lost tough second sets in extra games also.

The Hawkeyes will be back in action at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center this Friday. Iowa will face Northwestern (10-8, 1-3) with a 2 p.m. start time.
