IOWA CITY, Iowa – The final field for the West Region of the NCAA Track and Field Championships was announced today, sending 33 student-athletes from the University of Iowa track team to Eugene, Ore., for three days of competition beginning Thursday, May 26.
The men’s team is represented by a total of 28 qualifiers, made up of 20 student-athletes competing in 13 individual events and two relays. Since 2003, the men’s team has sent a total of 161 qualifiers to the NCAA Regional and this season’s total of 20 student-athletes ties an Iowa school record set last year. The Iowa men are seeded 10th or higher in six events
“The number of individuals advancing to this elite event is a reflection of the type of season we’ve had, both at the indoor and outdoor conference championships,” said head men’s coach Larry Wieczorek. “We’re excited to advance to Eugene, Ore., and take our performance to the national scene.”
The women’s team will send 16 qualifiers, with 13 student-athletes competing in nine individual events and one relay. Since 2003, the women’s team has sent 130 qualifiers to the NCAA Qualifier. Among this year’s qualifiers are two true freshmen, Ashley Liverpool (400) and Carisa Leacock (long jump).
“We’re thrilled to send such a great group of student-athletes to the NCAA Championships,” said head women’s track and field coach Layne Anderson. “The athletes have been working hard towards this goal and I know they’ll do a tremendous job of representing our program and the University of Iowa.”
The top 12 individuals or relays in each event from each preliminary site (East and West) will move on to the final NCAA Championship round in Des Moines, Iowa, June 8-11.
