IOWA CITY, Iowa – The start of two construction projects and the preparation for a third has triggered a shuffling of the parking options on game days of the University of Iowa football team.
The University of Iowa will break ground on a new indoor practice facility for its football program and a transportation center for the UI’s parking operation later this summer. The practice facility will be located on the western edge of the parking lot immediately west of the UI Recreation Building and south of the Ron and Margaret Kenyon Practice Facility. The transportation center will occupy several rows of parking spaces in the parking lot on the north side of Evashevski Drive, the street that runs immediately north of the north grandstand of historic Kinnick Stadium.
Also influencing the parking plan for game days at Kinnick is the planned construction of a new Iowa Children’s Hospital on the east side of Hawkins Drive. Membership in the highest giving levels of the National I-Club – Kinnick Society, Champions and Golden Hawk levels – also continues to increase and a benefit of each category of membership is priority parking on football game days.
“All of our adjustments are the result of progress. Membership in the National I-Club continues to increase, we are beginning an important project for our football program, and the UI is undertaking two very important projects, one that impacts our faculty, staff and students, and another that involves our hospital and improving the care given to children. These are exciting and important projects,” said Gary Barta, the UI’s director of athletics.

Barta also noted that when construction is completed on the football facility and the transportation center , the UI expects a net increase in total parking space because the footprint used for the football team’s current indoor practice facility – “The Bubble” – will be converted into parking. He also noted that both construction projects are expected to be completed prior to the 2013 college football season.
As in the past, virtually all parking spaces located adjacent to or within the immediate proximity of Kinnick are reserved for contributors to the National I-Club. Also – as in the past – contributors who plan to park in these spaces on game days are required to purchase their parking in advance. The cost of parking has not changed for 2011.
Here is a summary of the changes that will go into effect for seven-game home game schedule of the 2011 football team:
Kinnick Society and Champion – Automobiles: Several rows in University Lot 43 (Stadium) [Parking Area A] immediately north of Kinnick Stadium will be under construction. University Lot 14 (south of Slater Residence Hall) [Parking Area D] is a new option that includes 200 parking spaces. Lot 14 will no longer be an alcohol-free lot.
Kinnick Society and Champion – Recreation Vehicles: K/C RV parking will remain a reserved space but will be limited to approximately 110 parking spaces and access will be based on Athletic Ticket Priority. First priority will be given to Kinnick Society members. If space remains available, Champions members will be provided access based on priority. The new K/C RV parking lots will include 85 spaces in University Lot 75 (new lot located northwest of Kenyon Practice Facility) [Parking Area B] and approximately 25 parking spaces in University Lot 46 (west of Carver-Hawkeye Arena) [Parking Area C]. Note: There will be no RV or bus parking west of the UI Recreation Building or on Cambus Circle.
