PALO ALTO, Calif. — Paul Gordon advanced to the finals in the 200 free to place 26th at the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships being held at Stanford University’s Avery Aquatic Center. Four other members of the University of Iowa swimming and diving program competed Wednesday.
Gordon posted a 28th place finish at prelims in the 200 free (1:51.19) Wednesday morning to advance to the finals round later in the day. In the finals competition, Gordon touched the wall at 1:51.06 to move up two places to 26th and earn a personal best time in the event.
Jordan Huff also competed in the 200 free and posted a time of 1:53.57. Teammates Dustin Rhoads and Grant Betulius raced in the 100 back. Rhoads posted a time of 58.70, while Betulius finished in 59.81.
Daniela Cubelic represented the women’s squad in the 100 back. She earned a time of 1:05.14.
Gordon and Huff teamed up with Duncan Partridge and Ryan Phelan in the men’s 400 free relay that competed in Tuesday’s finals competition. The quartet recorded a time of 3:25.35 to place 13th amongst some of the nations fastest swimmers.
Gordon, Partridge and Phelan will return to action tomorrow to represent the Hawkeyes along with teammate Byron Butler.
