Gordon and Phelan Advance to Finals

PALO ALTO, Calif. — University of Iowa men’s swimmers Paul Gordon and Ryan Phelan advanced to the finals at the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships being held at Stanford University’s Avery Aquatic Center Thursday. Gordon placed 26th in the 100 fly, while Phelan finished 28th in the 50 free.

Gordon recorded a personal best time of 54.24 in the 100 fly during the prelims round Thursday morning, which advanced him to the finals. He went on to place 26th overall with a time of 54.50.

Following Gordon’s 100 fly performance, Phelan posted a 28th place finish in the 50 free (22.96). Earlier in the day at preliminary round Phelan posted a personal best time of 22.96 in the event.

Gordon and teammate Duncan Partridge competed in the 50 free during the preliminary around and recorded times of 23.24 and 23.80, respectively. Byron Butler also competed Thursday morning in the 100 fly and finished in 55.93.

Gordon and Partridge will return to the pool tomorrow to represent the Hawkeyes along with teammates Jordan Huff and Tyler Lentz.
