CHICAGO — The University of Iowa women’s soccer team opened the 2011 season in Chicago, Ill., against DePaul Friday night at Wish Field. The Hawkeyes earned a 3-0 decision.
Sophomore standout, Alex Melin, was the first Hawkeye to score. Melin fired one into the net from 20 yards out after a pass from Dana Dalrymple was on target. The goal hit the net at the 43 minute mark, two minutes prior to the half time break.
Following the intermission, freshman Cloé Lacasse sealed the win with a pair of goals. Lacasse’s first score, a short shot from inside the box, crossed the goal line at 53:52. Just five minutes later, the Sudbury, Ontario native, converted a corner kick from senior Morgan Showalter. The third goal of the game sealed the win for the Hawkeyes.
“I thought this was a good start,” said Head Coach Ron Rainey. “Again, one of our goals through the first couple games is our effort level and how hard we work on the field. I thought the team worked really hard, everybody who was on the field for the whole 90 minutes. We’re looking forward to Sunday.”
Senior Emily Moran recorded 90 minutes between the posts, making four saves on the way to the shutout victory. With the win, Moran ties Britta Voegele’s school record for career victories (23). Vogele collected the 23 wins from 2001-04 to set the school record.
The Black and Gold return to Iowa City for a home game Sunday afternoon against Southeast Missouri State. The Iowa Athletic Department is hosting a Tailgate Kickoff prior to the game with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
