The start of another exciting season of college football at the University of Iowa’s historic Kinnick Stadium is coming fast and I’m sure you are just like me: You can’t wait for kickoff.
The first “Swarm,” the first first down and, of course, the first touchdown of the new season will be here before we know it. However – as I suggest each year – I do ask that you take a moment to review the information enclosed in this mailing. Our intention is simple: We want fans of the Hawkeyes fully aware of the game-day policies and procedures so that all seven of your visits this fall to the UI campus and the greater Iowa City/Coralville area are problem-free.

We made tremendous progress with that minority a year ago which is why we will be reminding fans of the Hawkeyes to “Think Before You Drink” again this fall. Our goal is very simple and straightforward: To reduce to zero the number of fans who abuse alcohol because they are, more times than not, the cause of problems for the vast majority of fans who come to Kinnick to cheer the Hawkeyes to victory with the friends, neighbors or family members.

We also want to make you aware of any changes that you will find when arriving at Kinnick Stadium on a game day. The most significant changes this year have to do with game-day parking. The UI will begin three very important construction projects near Kinnick this fall: A new practice facility for our football program, a new transit center for the UI, and a new Iowa Children’s Hospital at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
These projects collectively have caused a rather significant domino effect on parking that is reserved for members of the National I-Club.
I encourage you to review the parking map inside the enclosed Kinnick Stadium Policies and Procedures brochure and/or visit the web page hawkeyesports.com/footballgamedayparking and familiarize yourself with the changes that are in effect for 2011. It’s also worth noting that many of the changes implemented for this season are temporary. In fact, when the construction projects that I’ve noted are completed we will have more parking spaces available on game days than in 2010.
As I wrote a year ago, game days at Kinnick are special because, together, we have created an environment that provides an incredible experience that begins with pre-game tailgating, continues with loud and proud support of the Hawkeyes, and ends with post-game celebrations. The majority of fans of the Hawkeyes do all of this in ways that are responsible and respectful. A handful, however, don’t and, too often, the reason for that is irresponsible consumption of alcohol.
