IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams won the Iowa Invitational on Friday at the Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City. The Hawkeye women’s team defeated Northern Iowa (15-47), while the men’s team defeated the Panthers (15-48).

Freshman Kevin Lewis won the 8K men’s event. He finished the race with a time of 25:31.70, while Iowa junior Nick Holmes was a split second behind with a time of 25:31.80. Also finishing among the top ten for the Hawkeyes was sophomore Jon Michael Brandt (25:55), freshmen Evan Selsor (26:05) and Ben Witt (26:19), sophomores Cameron Reiger (26:23) and Nick Young (26:42) and senior Chase Kadlec (26:56).

“I was really happy,” said men’s cross country coach Larry Wieczorek. “We were able to get out and execute like we have done in practice. The second meet gives us feedback on how our training has been going since we have worked out as a team. I was really happy with what we did, and I think this is a good confidence builder for the guys. It is a step forward for us.”

Junior Kelsey Hart won the 3K women’s event with a time of 10:22. Also finishing in the top 10 for the Hawkeyes was sophomore Megan Ranegar (10:33), senior Jackie Laesch (10:34), and sophomores Nicole Benson (10:39), Keelin Gorman (10:45) and Katherin Rehn (10:47).

The Iowa men’s squad will return to action Sept. 24 at the Roy Griak Invite in Minneapolis, Minn. The next competition for the women’s team will be Oct. 1 at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill.
