WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –The University of Iowa men’s tennis team finished the second day of the Purdue Invitational at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Saturday.
“We had a solid performance. Jonas Dierckx’s win was definitely a significant one,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “(Christopher) Speer also played very impressive today. The other positive for us was the performance from our young doubles team in (Chase) Tomlins and (Matt) Hagan.”
Sophomore Jonas Dierckxcontinued to provide highlights in the Flight A Singles Main Draw, defeating Purdue’s top singles player in the second round. Dierckx defeated Syzmon Tatarczyk 6-1, 6-0. After racking up two straight wins in the tournament, Dierckx fell in the quarterfinals.
Senior Christopher Speer rallied in the backside of the Flight B Singles Main Draw after an opening round loss on Friday. Speer went 3-0 on the day, reaching the consolation semifinals. Speer also went 2-0 with sophomore Joey Whiteon Friday to reach the Flight C finals where they will face Toledo’s Terrence Wiegland and Garrett Cona. That match will be played on Sunday.
Iowa’s youthful doubles team consisting of sophomore Chase Tomlins and freshman Matt Hagancontinued to impress in the Flight B Doubles Main Draw, reaching the finals after a victory. The duo improved to 3-0 together, defeating Toledo’s Bryant Dudzik and Nicholas Wong 8-4.
Tomlins and Mitch Beckertalso picked up singles victories in the consolations. Tomlins earned a win in the Flight A back side, while Beckert earned a win in Flight B consolations.
The Purdue Invitational will conclude tomorrow at the Scwartz Tennis Center with action set to resume again at 8:30 a.m.
