Pre-Qualifying Results

TULSA, Okla. —The University of Iowa men’s tennis team competed at the ITA All-American Championships as the pre-qualifying singles stage got underway Saturday at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Senior Will Vasos and sophomore Jonas Dierckx advanced in pre-qualifying for the Hawkeyes, reaching the third round as Vasos won two matches while Dierckx picked up one victory.

“We had a great first day with both Will and Jonas competing very well for us,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “Hopefully those two can win their matches Sunday and join Marc (Bruche) in the qualifying stage.”

Vasos, who led Iowa in singles and doubles victories last season, won both his matches by wide margins. Vasos defeated Purdue’s William Heuer 6-0, 6-3 in the first round. In the second round, Vasos knocked off Baylor’s Robbie Korth 6-1, 6-1.

Dierckx defeated Texas San Antonio’s Yannick Junger 7-5, 6-3 in the first round. Dierckx earned a bye in the second round as his slated opponent was advanced to the qualifying stage as an alternate.

Freshman Andres Estenssoro played his first match for the Hawkeyes. The Santa Cruz, Bolivia native fell to Radford’s Patrick O’Keefe 6-0, 6-3 in the first round.

Both Vasos and Dierckx will have to win two matches on Sunday to advance to the qualifying stage. Senior Marc Bruche, ranked No. 101 in singles, will be competing in the qualifying stage on Monday as well. Vasos and Bruche will also be competing in doubles.
