TULSA, Okla. — University of Iowa senior Marc Bruche advanced in the ITA All-American Championships as singles qualifying got underway Monday at the Case Tennis Center.
Bruche defeated San Diego State’s Javier Pulgar 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the qualifying stage. Bruche is ranked No. 101 nationally in singles. Bruche will face Florida’s Tripper Carleton in the second round on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
After winning four consecutive matches in pre-qualifying, senior Will Vasos was edged out by Damian Hume in the first round in the qualifying bracket. Hume, of Boise State, won 6-4, 6-4 over Vasos. Vasos will play in one consolation match on Tuesday as well.
“I continue to be very pleased with how Marc and Will are doing, particularly given the fact that they are playing some of the top players in the country,” said head coach Steve Houghton.
The Hawkeyes have now won six matches in the tournament with Bruche, Vasos and sophomore Jonas Dierckx adding to the win column.
Iowa will also have a doubles team compete in the qualifying bracket on Tuesday in Bruche and Vasos, who are ranked No. 41 nationally. The tandem will face either Oklahoma’s Costin Paval/Dane Webb or South Alabama’s Romain Bocaert/Cody Hall. That match will begin at 5:30 p.m.
