TULSA, Okla. — In a three set match that featured extra games in two of those sets, University of Iowa senior Marc Bruche came away victorious against Tripper Carleton in round two at the ITA All-American Championships.

Bruche is one victory away from advancing through the qualifying bracket into the main draw after starting the tournament 2-0. A victory from senior Will Vasos in a consolation match gave Iowa eight singles wins in the tournament.

Bruche and Vasos were defeated in the first round of doubles qualifying.

“It was another great day for us in singles with both Marc and Will playing well,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “The doubles loss was disappointing as we had beaten that team last week. We just didn’t play our best against a very hot team.”

No. 101 Bruche dropped the first set against Florida’s Carleton 6-7, but rebounded with a 7-5 victory in the second set. Bruche rode that momentum to a 6-0 win in the third set to claim the match. Bruche defeated San Diego State’s Javier Pulgar in the first qualifying round on Monday.

Bruche will face James Meredith of Boise State at 8 a.m. for an automatic ticket to the main draw. Losers of the third round qualifying match may still reach the main draw through the `lucky loser’ rule.

Senior Will Vasos won his final match of the tournament against Tulsa’s Tristan Jackson in consolation play 6-3, 6-3. Vasos finished with a 5-1 record, winning four pre-qualifying matches to reach the qualifying stage.

Bruche and Vasos fell in the first round of doubles qualifying to Oklahoma’s Costin Paval/Dane Webb 8-4. Bruche and Vasos previously defeated Paval in Webb in the semifinals of the Baylor-HEB Invitational.

Finals matches in qualifying doubles and singles will be Wednesday, while main draw competition will begin Thursday.
