That was a pretty good Penn State defense yesterday. Nonetheless, I simply can’t shake the feeling that the good guys had some opportunities, particularly, as Kirk said afterward, early in the game. It’s probably fair to suggest that the Iowa football team has played in two of the three most “hostile” environments they’ll see this season. Here’s hoping that the trips to Iowa State and Penn State have prepared them well for Minnesota, Purdue and, of course, Nebraska.
Eddie Podolak was quick to point out post-game yesterday that Iowa plays four of its next five games in Kinnick Stadium. Like Eddy, I like our odds of “getting healthy.” I’m also getting a little wiser with age and will resist the urge to count the chickens before their hatched. Fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes will once again have the opportunity to “stripe” historic Kinnick Stadium for the enjoyment of a prime time television audience Saturday when Iowa entertains Northwestern on BTN. If you’re going to Kinnick, the same rules apply: Even numbered sections wear GOLD, odd numbered sections wear BLACK, and UI students in the student section wear BLACK. Go Hawks! |
I did a little “scouting” last night compliments one of my favorite television networks, BTN. It appeared to me that both the Wildcats and the Wolverines offer some pretty entertaining offenses. I’m really out on a limb there, aren’t I? Turnovers and takeaways were, as always, a big piece of the final outcome. Gotta hang on to the pigskin. Again, these pearls of wisdom are clear evidence of why I’m not a coach.
Tracey Greisbaum’s Iowa field hockey team got a big win yesterday, knocking off Ohio State 3-zip in Columbus. You can read about it HERE. The win snapped a six-game winning streak for the Buckeyes. Greisbaum said her team was “opportunistic.” It was good timing, too. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Hawkeyes and gives them some nice momentum for their game against Indiana next Saturday at 1 p.m. – something for you to consider checking out while waiting for the prime time kickoff at Kinnick.
Here’s another option for next Friday: Stop by the Krause Family Plaza and visit with a handful of former Hawkeyes like Jared DeVries, Tim Dwight and Marv Cook at the “Legends Tent.” It’s one of the many actitivies that are part of ANF Day at Kinnick presented by Iowa Farm Bureau. The fun extends all the way to Carver where Fran’s squad will stage their first practice of the 2011-12 season on Mediacom Court beginning at 1 p.m. And, lastly, remember next week’s game is the second annual Black and Gold Spirit Game – even sections wear gold, odd sections and UI students wear black. If Mike Meyer keeps this up, the placekicker position will be a source of zero concern for the Iowa football coaching staff for years to come. Meyer, a sophomore from Dubuque, nailed a 23-yarder in the second quarter yesterday to push him to 9 for 11 in 2011 and 23 for 28 as a Hawkeye. I know the devil is in the detail in this comparison, but I’ll share it anyway: Nate Kaeding – the most accurate field goal kicker in the history of the NFL and an All-American as a Hawkeye – missed 12 field goal attempts in his first two seasons en route to becoming Iowa’s career scoring leader with 373 points.
