FRENCH LICK, Ind. —The University of Iowa women’s golf team ended the first 36-holes of the Lady Northern Invitational in a tie for eighth after shooting a 616 (307-309, +48). Big Ten foe Ohio State leads the 12-team field at 583 (293-290, +15). Individually, junior Kristi Cardwell recorded season-best 18- and 36-hole scores to finish the day tied for eighth. Indiana University is hosting the 54-hole tournament at the 6,037 yard, par 71 Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Golf Resort in French Lick, Ind., the site of the 2012 Big Ten Championships.
“We definitely struggled around the greens today, but I felt like by the end of the second round we were thinking better,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “Kristi had a very solid day and finished her second round with three birdies.”
Cardwell paced the Hawkeyes with a 148 (78-70, +6), her best 36-hole score of the season. The Kokomo, Ind., native also carded a season-best 18-hole score, as she shot a one-under 70 during the second round. Cardwell finished the second round with back-to-back-to-back birdies to end the day with a team-high six birdies. Her second round 70 was one stroke higher than her career-low 69, set at the 2010 Challenge at Onion Creek, and was Iowa’s first sub-par round of the season. Cardwell enters the final round in a tie for eighth, eight strokes behind leader Kendall Price of Ohio State (73-67=140, -2).
Senior Chelsea Harris and freshman Lauren English tied for 35th after they both fired 155’s (+13). Harris entered the second round tied for fourth after posting a season-best round of 73 (+2) during the opening round. Junior Gigi DiGrazia and freshman Shelby Phillips rounded out the Iowa scorecard. DiGrazia shot a 161 (80-81, +19) while Phillips fired a 163 (84-79, +21). Sophomore Karly Grouwinkel competed as an individual. She recorded a 184 (97-87, +42).
The Hawkeyes return to the Donald Ross Course on Tuesday for the final round. Play will begin with an 8:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start.
