FRENCH LICK, Ind. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team finished 10th at the Lady Northern Invitational after shooting a 310 (+26) during the third round on Tuesday. The Hawkeyes finished the 54-hole tournament, hosted at the 6,037 yard, par 71 Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Golf Resort, with a 926 (307-309-310, +74). Central Florida fired an 887 (308-290-289, +35) to win the tournament title. Big Ten foes Ohio State (293-290-309=892, +40) and Michigan (298-293-302=893, +41) finished second and third.
“This was not the day we were looking for, but this is a tough course and playing it made us a better team,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “We exposed some weaknesses in our games and look forward to getting back and working hard before Texas.”
Junior Gigi DiGrazia and freshman Shelby Phillips posted team-low 76’s (+5) during the third round. DiGrazia moved up 12 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a 44th place tie. Phillips climbed 11 spots, finishing in a tie for 50th. Senior Chelsea Harris was one stroke off DiGrazia’s and Phillips’ pace, as she fired a 77 (+6). Harris led Iowa with four third round birdies. The Normal, Ill., native ended the tournament in a tie for 33rd after shooting a 232 (73-82-77=232, +19).
Junior Kristi Cardwell finished in a tie for 23rd with a season-best 229 (78-70-81, +16). Cardwell also recorded season-best 18- (70) and 36-hole (148) scores at the event. Freshman Lauren English rounded out the Iowa scorecard with a 238 (76-79-83, +26). English registered a hole-in-one on the 184 yard, par 3 sixth hole during the first round.
Sophomore Karly Grouwinkel also played at the tournament. Grouwinkel finished with a 272 (97-87-88, +59) while competing as an individual
The Hawkeyes will close out their fall schedule Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas.
