IOWA CITY, Iowa – This ain’t your father’s Northwestern University football program Kirk Ferentz said in so many words Tuesday afternoon when he sat down for his weekly chat with the local, regional and national media. It’s also not the college football program Ferentz, the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, enjoyed so much success against during the 1980s and 90s as an assistant coach at Iowa under Hall of Fame head coach Hayden Fry.
“They have done a very nice job certainly and I think if you look back at their program, going back to the mid 90s when they really got that thing established,” Ferentz said. “They did a good job under Gary Barnett, Randy Walker, and I think Pat has put his mark on the program. Pat Fitzgerald has done a great job with the team and continues to move them forward.”
As focused as Ferentz is on the Wildcats, winners of the last three games in the series but only nine of 32 games played in Kinnick, and Dan Persa, their elusive quarterback, his focus remains on his team, the Iowa Hawkeyes, a squad that – like most across the country — is still developing, learning, growing.
“Most teams are developmental. Not all of them but most of them. Alabama, probably not. Oklahoma, probably not. But most teams are to some degree doing that,” he said.

“So it’s like anything else, it’s a race against time, how quickly can you move on if you don’t have a lot of experienced players, how can you get that experience and get guys to react in a good way when situations pop up. It’s an ongoing process and, as you know, there’s a lot of variables that take place during the course of the season. That’s the deal.”

Learning and growing… it happens best on the playing field and on Saturday night that field is inside Kinnick. The Hawkeyes play four of their next five games at home. Saturday is “ANF Day” at Kinnick. The UI will team with the Iowa Farm Bureau to celebrate America’s farmers. It’s also the second annual Black and Gold Spirit Game, an effort that asks fans to “stripe” the stadium by wearing GOLD if they are seated in an even-numbered section of Kinnick or BLACK if they are in an odd-number section of the stadium.
“It’s going to be a big challenge for our football team,” Ferentz said. “We are excited to be back in Kinnick again where our fans continue to be absolutely fantastic. It should be a great environment, too.”
Iowa’s next game is against Indiana next Saturday at 11 a.m., Iowa time, in historic Kinnick Stadium. It will be televised live by BTN.
