AUSTIN, Texas – – The University of Iowa women’s golf team fired a season-best 297 (+9) during the first round of the 38th annual Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational on Monday at the 6,344 yard, par 72 University of Texas Golf Club. Iowa’s previous season-low was 298, set Sept. 26 at the Dick McGuire Invitational. The Hawkeyes ended the opening round in a seventh place tie with Pepperdine. Florida sits atop the 15-team leaderboard at 285 (-3), while Big 12 foes Texas (288, E) and Oklahoma State (290, +2) are in second and third.
“We played a pretty solid opening round,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “It was great to see Shelby Phillips put a solid round together.”
Phillips, a freshman from Gilbert, Ariz., fired a season-low 72 (E) to finish the round in a 12th place tie. Phillips fired a one-under 35 on the course’s back nine and registered a team-best three birdies over the 18-holes.
Junior Kristi Cardwell recorded birdies on holes eight and 13 and pared 12 of 18 holes, finishing tied for 26th with a two-over 74. Freshman Lauren English ended the day a stroke behind Cardwell with a 75 (+3). English eagled the 348 yard, par 4 first hole. She was one of two players among the 81 participants to eagle the hole.
Senior Chelsea Harris pared 14 of 18 holes en route to a 76 (+4). She enters the second round in a 43rd place tie. Senior Gigi DiGrazia rounded out the Iowa scorecard with an 83 (+11).
Competition will resume Tuesday with an 8:15 a.m. (CT), split-tee start.
