IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior soccer player Morgan Showalter has been named the Big Ten Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Showalter earned the nod after scoring on a penalty kick and helping the defense to a shutout victory over Wisconsin (2-0).
Showalter played a key role in the team’s seventh shutout of the season. The Cedar Rapids native worked with her teammates in the backfield to hold the Badgers to three shots on-goal through 90 minutes of play. With less than 10 minutes in the game, Showalter stepped up to convert a PK opportunity for Iowa and seal the conference win.
Showalter is the third Hawkeye to win a conference honor this season. Senior goalkeeper Emily Moran was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 22 and freshman forward Cloe Lacasse garnered Freshman of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks (Sept. 5, 12). This is the first conference honor for Showalter.
Showalter and the Hawkeyes take on Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
