Hawkeyes Host Annual Black & Gold Intrasquad

Dec. 4, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s gymnastics teams kicked off the 2011-12 season with their annual Black and Gold Intrasquad meet Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes divided into co-ed teams to showcase their talents in front of nearly 500 fans at the UI Field House. The Gold team won the exhibition event 473.60-460.65.

“Today was an important step for our team,” said women’s head coach Larissa Libby. “We saw a lot of positive things from our gymnasts, but we need to show consistency. With a young team, more consistency will come with every meet, but I liked what I saw from them today.”

“We had a good meet. We expected there to be some misses here and some falls here, but this is a learning process and it’s early in the season,” said men’s head coach JD Reive. “It was good to get our guys in front of a crowd and judges to see where we are at. We have work to do, but we have time to do it.”

The women’s team will begin its regular season with a trip to Cancun, Mexico, for the Cancun Classic Jan. 6. The men’s team will kick off its season Jan. 14 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill.
