Dec. 4, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2011 Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., where the Hawkeyes will meet 19th-ranked Oklahoma (9-3) of the Big 12 Conference. The Insight Bowl is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 30. The game will be televised by ESPN from Arizona State’s Sun Devil Stadium (56,000) in Tempe Ariz.

The Hawkeyes are making their second straight appearance in the Insight Bowl, having defeated 12th-ranked Missouri 27-24 on Dec. 28, 2010. Iowa has posted a 14-10-1 record in 25 previous bowl appearances. Five of Iowa’s previous bowl games have been against a Big 12 opponent, with Iowa posting a 4-1 record in those games.

Iowa is playing in the same bowl game in consecutive years for the second time. The Hawkeyes won the Holiday Bowl in both 1986 and 1987.

Iowa posted a 7-5 record in 2011, including a 4-4 record in Big Ten play. Iowa’s schedule included eight games against teams that are bowl eligible. Oklahoma (9-3) began the season as the top-ranked team in the nation in both the Associated Press and ESPN coaches’ rankings. The Sooners were 5-3 in conference play.

Iowa and Oklahoma have met just once on the football field, with the Sooners winning 21-6 at Norman, Okla. on Sept. 15, 1979. Current Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops is an Iowa graduate and a four-year football letterman (1979-82). He previously was a graduate assistant (1983-84) and volunteer assistant (1986-87) on the Iowa coaching staff.

Iowa is bowl eligible for the 11th consecutive season and will participate in its 10th bowl game since 2001 under Coach Kirk Ferentz. Iowa has posted a 6-3 bowl record under Ferentz. Iowa is one of four programs to have won a bowl game in each of the past three years.
