TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Iowa women’s swimming team faced No. 5 Arizona, Oregon State, Northern Arizona and New Mexico State Friday afternoon inside the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on the University of Arizona Campus. The Hawkeyes beat Oregon State (145-117), Northern Arizona (181-81) and New Mexico State (160-102) but fell to Arizona (168-91).
Coming off a brief hiatus, Iowa kicked off the competition with the 400 medley relay. The squad of Daniela Cubelic, Karolina Wartalowicz, Abbey Tuchscherer and Heather Arseth posted a fourth place finish with a time of 3:52.21. The squad finished behind two Arizona squads (3:42.32-3:47.74) and Oregon State (3:50.87).
Following the relays, freshman Becky Stoughton won the 1,000 free touching the wall in 9:49.43. Hillary Weigand placed fifth in the event with a time of 10:24.74. Stoughton claimed her second individual first place finish on the day in the 500 free (4:55.32). She also placed third in the 200 free (1:50.77).
Senior Danielle Carty recorded a third place finish in the 50 free with time of 23.95. Arseth touched the wall behind Carty to place fourth (24.11). Tuchscherer posted another third place finish for the Hawkeyes in the 100 fly with her time of 57.47.
Before the last event of the afternoon, sophomore Haley Gordon posted a first place finish in the 200 IM. She touched the wall first at 2:08.17.
The Hawkeyes concluded Friday’s competition with the 200 free relay. Carty, Cubelic, Hannah Maher and Arseth teamed up and raced to a second place finish (1:36.54).
Iowa returns home Jan. 14 when it hosts Illinois. The meet is set to being at 11 a.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
