TUCSON, Ariz. — The No. 15 University of Iowa men’s swimming team took on No. 1 Arizona Friday afternoon inside the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on the University of Arizona Campus. The Hawkeyes put up a good fight against the Wildcats but swimming’s No.1 team prevailed, defeating the Hawkeyes 181-80.

Coming off a brief hiatus, Iowa kicked off competition with the 400 medley relay. The squad of Dustin Rhoads, Korey Schneider, Byron Butler and Jordan Huff posted a third place finish with a time of 3:22.95.

Following the relay, sophomore Manuel Belzer recorded an individual first place finish in the 1,000 free. He touched the wall first at 9:34.99. Belzer went on to claim his second individual finish of the day in the 500 free (4:35.13).

Paul Gordon and Huff placed second and third in the 200 free with times of 1:40.46 and 1:41.41, respectively. Gordon went on to place third in the 100 free (45.70).

Senior Ryan Phelan recorded a second place finish in the 50 free with a time of 20.52. Phelan finished behind Arizona’s Kelley Wymann (20.19). Later in the competition Phelan placed fourth in the 100 free (46.32).

The Hawkeyes concluded Friday’s competition with the 200 free relay. Phelan, Gordon, Duncan Partridge and Huff teamed up and raced to a first place finish. The team posted a time of 1:22.57.

Iowa returns Jan. 21 when it travels to Evanston, Ill., to take on Northwestern. The meet is set to start at 11 a.m.
