Jan. 24, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa swimmer Becky Stoughton has been tabbed as the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is Stoughton’s second Freshman of the Week honor and third Big Ten accolade this season.

The Peoria, Ill., native earned the distinction after winning a total of four events in Iowa’s dual against Northwestern and Harvard on Jan. 21. She opened with an individual title in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:56.86. Following the completion of the men’s 1,000 free, Stoughton was back in the pool, swimming to a win in the 200 free in 1:49.63.

Stoughton, who was the only Hawkeye to win more than one individual event, also claimed the individual title in the 500-free (4:52.27) before closing out the dual by swimming the anchor leg of the winning 400 free relay. The relay posted a time of 3:24.65, which was an NCAA “B” qualifying time.

Stoughton earned her first Freshman of the Week nod on Dec. 10 following a pair of victories in the dual meet at fifth-ranked Arizona. She also was selected as the Division I National Swimmer of the Week by collegeswimming.com and the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 8.

Stoughton and the Hawkeyes return to the pool on Jan. 27-28 at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
