WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Dartmouth in the second match of the Tribe Kickoff Tournament at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center Saturday in Williamsburg, Va.
The Hawkeyes (0-2) lost both of their matches by the slimmest of margins in the tournament despite claiming the doubles point in both contests. Iowa was topped by William & Mary 4-3 earlier in the day. Dartmouth improved to 2-0 on the season. Iowa will look to get on the winning side Sunday, facing George Washington at 9 a.m. to conclude the tournament.
Sophomore Jonas Dierckx defeated a ranked opponent in No. 2 singles, topping No. 82 Cameron Ghorbani in three-sets. Dierckx won 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Dierckx has won six of his last seven singles matches going back to the fall season as two of those wins came against ranked foes. Dierckx is yet to lose in singles or doubles at the Tribe Kickoff Tournament.
Junior Garret Dunn provided the other singles victory for Iowa, beating Dartmouth’s Sam Todd in No. 6 singles play. Dunn won 6-2, 6-3.
Dunn and sophomore Michael Swank improved to 2-0 in No. 1 doubles in the spring season with an 8-4 victory against Michael Laser and Alex de Chatellus. Dierckx and freshman Matt Hagan also improved to 2-0 by clinching the doubles point for the Hawkeyes with a win in the No. 3 hole. Dierckx and Hagan defeated Mike Jacobs and Chris Kipouras 9-8.
