Hawkeyes Close Tournament With Victory

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team picked up its first victory of the season with a 4-2 victory against George Washington Sunday at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in the final match of the Tribe Kickoff Tournament.

The Hawkeyes (1-2 overall) took three-of-five singles bouts against the Colonials (0-3) and claimed the doubles point for the third meet in a row.

Sophomore Jonas Dierckx stayed perfect on the year in singles with another strong effort. Dierckx took a three-set match against Alex van Gils 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Dierckx is 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles play. Freshman Matt Hagan earned his first dual singles victory of his career with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Ulrik Thomsen. Hagan was named the USTA Missouri Valley Player of the Year after a strong fall campaign.

Seniors Tom Mroziewicz and Will Vasos won the deciding doubles match against the Colonials Francisco Dias and Viktor Svensson by an 8-2 margin.

The Hawkeyes will return to Iowa City on Feb. 3rd with the home opener against Arkansas. Start time is set for 2 p.m. (CT) inside the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
